Etiquette for separate wedding and reception?
My fiance and I have always wanted a small, beach wedding, but a huge party afterwards, so to get the best of both worlds, we've decided to have the wedding one weekend (and only invite close family and friends) then have the reception the next weekend (inviting all our family and friends). My question is how do you word the invitations? Should I send out separate invitations to wedding guests and reception guests? Do I include a letter/note saying why we want a small wedding? Any and all suggestions welcome!
Just send out two different sets of invitations. One set, for the close family and friends, has information for both the ceremony and the reception on it, and the second set has just the reception info on it. Just make sure you don't accidentally send them to the wrong people! Don't include a letter. They sill just assume you either eloped or had a very small ceremony, and they'll be fine with it. The reception's the fun part, anyway!
I'm doing something similar- because of the small venue, I'm having only immediate family and lifelong friends at the ceremony itself, then having the reception for everybody. I'm doing it on the same day, though. But I'll just be sending out two different invitations for the two groups I've separated my guest list into. Also, on my wedding website under the ceremony information part, I just put a little note that said "Our wedding will be a small ceremony for immediate family, followed by a larger reception for family and friends."
