George Jones and Tammy Wynette had already been married three years when they began cutting duets together, and this album's opening pledge of eternal love, 1971's "Take Me," followed by their recitation of wedding vows in "The Ceremony," sets the tone early on. Somewhere soon thereafter, Jones began hitting the bottle and the blow again, and by 1973 he and Wynette were knocking on wood and pledging "We're Gonna Hold On." They did reconcile, but the next year they were lamenting "We Loved It Away," and in 1976 they checked out with the lachrymose "Golden Ring." By 1980 they were feeling more conciliatory toward each other, explaining themselves with the comeback "Two Story House." Great autobiographical track not about the ups and downs of their relationship: "(We're Not) The Jet Set." The sixth and final season of I Love Lucy finds new laughs in some old formulas while also expanding the hugely popular show's horizons with a change of scene. Things get off to a familiar start when Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball) gets in the middle of husband Ricky's business--in this case, disguising herself as a hot dog salesman at Yankee Stadium in order to get near Bob Hope. Hope, she believes, has ignored Ricky's offer to be the first act at his new nightclub. But, in fact, Hope had already agreed; Ricky was just sitting on the information to keep Lucy from getting typically ditzy in front of one of his celebrity pals. Not surprisingly, mayhem follows when poor Hope finds his hand slathered with condiments and his noggin bonked by a foul ball. Other celebrity sightings include Orson Welles, who copes with Lucy's aspirations as a Shakespearean actress, and George Reeves, television's Superman, who shows up unexpectedly, in costume, at Little Ricky's birthday party. Meanwhile, Lucy--who didn't want to disappoint the tyke--stands in a makeshift Man of Steel outfit on a window ledge, in the rain. A number of episodes concern Little Ricky (Keith Thibodeaux) now that he's old enough to be a functioning character on the show. In "Little Ricky Learns to Play the Drums," the lad takes after his musician father and starts playing percussion, leading to some frayed nerves. A couple of episodes later, young Ricardo gets a bad case of stage fright at school, and Lucy suggests Ricky let him play the drums at the nightclub. (But then, of course, she has to figure out how to talk her son into performing.) A big change comes to I Love Lucy in the season's second half, when the Ricardos decide it's time to become homeowners and pull up stakes at their old Manhattan apartment. Moving to a nice, new house in Connecticut, they're soon joined by Fred (William Frawley) and Ethel (Vivian Vance), and the season's storylines take on a distinctly suburban flavor, with country clubs, barbecues, and gardens figuring into the comedy. With those developments, I Love Lucy came to a close after making television history as a much-beloved sitcom. Everybody Loves Raymond has always been a show about a dysfunctional family that somehow manages to pull it together when it matters. Rather than growing tired in its sixth season, the sitcom manages to entertain viewers as it delves into the characters' often unpleasant characteristics: Raymond's (Ray Romano) spinelessness when it comes to his mother; Debra's (Patricia Heaton) simmering anger with her interfering mother-in-law; Marie's (Doris Roberts) insulting backhanded compliments, Frank's (Peter Boyle) chauvinistic treatment of his wife, and Robert's (Brad Garrett) increasing jealousy where Raymond is concerned. The season's opening episode sets the tone for the year's 25 episodes. At a school function, Michael (Sullivan Sweeten) reads his story to a rapt audience that includes his mom and dad, grandparents, and uncle. The story is called "The Angry Family." As the little boy talks about the extreme decibel level in the fictional home, the Barones turn beet red. It's a story about them, they think, and they're horrified and embarrassed. Robert can't get beyond the fact that he wasn't included at all in the child's project. (They later learn that a cartoon was the inspiration for Michael's boisterous storybook family.) The show works at its best when combining pathos with humor. Unsatisfied with their sex life, Raymond complains to his wife, "So you can stay up to read, but you can't stay up two minutes for sex?" Debra, who can be so outspoken, is unable to express her sexual desires to her husband. Ray finally breaks the ice by asking, "Are you going to tell me what you want?" Debra purrs back, "I want you to help me with the laundry." Raymond is not above putting his needs above his wife's. When Debra decides to run for school president, he sabotages her chances so he won't have to stay home alone with the kids. With his hangdog features and dry delivery, Romano (Ice Age) does an admirable job as Ray--a grown man who longs for the simplicities of his childhood when his mother took care of everything. Of course, that affection comes with a price. "I don't want you in the middle," she tells him during a family spat. "I want you on my side." Unlike the perfect families depicted on The Cosby Show or The Brady Bunch, the Barones are flawed. They bicker, simmer, and stew. But most importantly, they laugh. --Jae-Ha Kim
